For more than fifty years, Jack Purcell was at the helm of the leading society orchestra in Pittsburgh, playing at country clubs, proms, hotels, and debutante balls all around the city. He was Pittsburgh’s very own Lester Lanin.

His story is not only a salute to the Big Band Era, but a fascinating portrait of a man who emerged from a coal-mining town in Central Pennsylvania to devote his life to music, first as a violinist and then as a trombonist. A graduate of Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie-Mellon University), he played for the Pittsburgh Symphony before forming the highly successful orchestra that made him a household name.
